1998 Renault Espace Two Wheel Drive Automatic 84.000 miles

hi, i, have a 1998 renault espace petrol automatic. My car has recently developed a problem. When I am driving it every so often it will slow down then after a few minutes it would be ok again. We have just been on holiday and the car has done a steady motorway speed of 70 mph for at least 100 miles, yet when stuck in trafic on the way home it slowed down again strugglingto get 40mph. Then all of a sudden it picks up again.I am completly baffled.

Does the check engine light show on the dash display ? it could be a fault on the TPS (throttle position sensor) have the vehicle plugged into a diagnostic computer to see if there are any fault codes showing on the car's computer ??
