1999 Renault Clio car boiling

I drive a renault clio 99.1.2.I keep topping it up with coolant. Then engine over heats temp gage hits red. I stop. But coolant is still same. Whats wrong could it be termostat.

Could be thermostat could also be water pump. Check you are getting circulation. If your geting a slight circulation your thermostat is probably stuc. No circulation means pump i'm afraid.
