What tools are you using to try and remove the top bolt? If I remember correctly, you need to use a 24 inch extension and a swivel socket so that you can come at it from a more straight on angle. Then once you get it out, you have to turn the wheels to one side in order to get the starter out.
Here is a video on a mustang. It is not exactly the same but it should give a little different idea.
