Random, wild electrical issues?

Update: 144,083 miles.

I purchased this car for $500.00 from my uncle. Because it had sat idle for over a year, I replaced everything: hoses, battery, tires, alternator, fuses, brakes, spark plugs, shocks, etc.

And then it started acting weird electrically.

Sometimes the radio will come on and the key isn’t in the ignition.
There’s a light burning smell.
Sometimes the interior lights work and sometimes they don’t (no rhyme or pattern, just random).
Dashboard lights flicker on and off.
Radio turns on and off on its own.

Every place I’ve taken it to (two dealerships) they’ve said it will take about $500.00 just to see what the problem is, not even to fix what’s wrong which could be thousands of dollars they’ve said.

What I keep hoping for us to find someone who can walk me step-by-step through what to do with this car to get to the bottom of what’s going on. The car is a classic and I’d like to salvage it if I can and if I can’t, I’d like to know definitively from someone who knows what they’re talking about that it’s a loss.

I have a really solid guy who can look at anything someone asks us to check, he’s just not an electrical guy and doesn’t even know where to begin.

Hi,

If you smell a slight burning, chances are there is something shorted and hot. Can you tell approx where the smell is coming from? If you can, touch the wiring in that area and see if any are hot.

Next, have you confirmed the battery ground is clean, tight, and not corroded at the engine block and body grounds?

Let's try something. I want you to try to pull diagnostic trouble codes. This has an OBD1 system which doesn't require a scan tool. Follow the directions in this link and let me know if codes are found:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/lexus-trouble-codes-obd1-1990-1995-code-retrieval-procedure

Let me know. Also, if you smell something electrical, that is a concern. See if you can narrow things down to an approx location. I did check the manuals to see if there were any technical service bulletins related to the electronics, and nothing is listed, so we need to narrow this done one thing at a time.

Take care and let me know what you find.

Joe

Hi Joe,

Wow! Thanks so much for this detailed reply.

I’m not capable of doing any of this, so I have to enlist the support of my car guy.

It might take me a week or so, especially because of the holiday, to get a hold of him and get him to where the car is, but I will do so and get back to you.

So, if you don’t hear from me for a bit, that’s what’s going on. I’m not going to bail on this thread. I need all the help I can get.

Thanks again!
