Radio volume goes off when I start to drive

The radio comes on fine and works when stationary then soon as I drive on with in five seconds the volume goes off the radio stays on. It shows the stations the volume on the display says it is working and the time is on the display. Everything else just no volume.

This sounds like it could be the alternator which has a diode out and is starting to throw a/c voltage.
