Was the radiator replacement necessary?

Hey,

I took my car to a mechanic, and they said I needed a new engine. This was in line with the diagnostic of another mechanic, so I went with it.
But then they said I also needed to replace the radiator as they found a hole in it, so it was leaking. That was a surprise as I just replaced it myself not long ago and there was no leak then, whatsoever. They went on to explain that I bolt I used to attach it, was too big so it pierced through. They eventually showed me that bolt and it was a size 10, instead of size 8.
I don’t understand how this could have happened as I took back home my old radiator and the size 10 bolt. I tried several times to pierce through the mounting pipes of the radiator with that bolt, but it’s not going through at all.

I need help here, please. I explained it to the manager of the shop but that went nowhere. I was charged for the radiator replacement.
So, my question is: is their explanation for the cause of the leak legit? Or did I get played?
Thanks for the response.

Hi,

The radiator support bracket needed to be removed to remove the engine, and the radiator hoses and coolant need removed. I wouldn't think they should have charged labor for that.

As far as the bolt is concerned, I would need to see where it is located and what they are telling you. If you measure the length of the bolt, is it long enough to reach what they say is damaged? Also, could you take a couple of pics and upload them so I can see what you are dealing with?

Let me know.

Take care,

joe
