The steering was making noise and I isolated it to the rack and pinion. The car sat for a weekend and upon return the steering was locked up.

I replaced the rack and pinion with the electric power steering since 2010 does not fall under Ford's recall of this part.

I am getting an alignment but I have read it may need to have the electric power steering "flashed". The car drives fine and I don't have any codes or display messages. Is this necessary?

There was an update for the pscm (power steering control module) but might not fix your issue. The pscm does not like it when voltage goes low like a dead or weak battery and I've seen several fail due to this. There are no guarantees if you get it reflashed.

The rack has been replaced and I have had an alignment completed. The car drives great so I don't have any issue after the rack replacement.

My question is does the electric power steering needs to be flashed after replacement even if it shows no codes or error messages?

Thanks.

Oh okay, as long as there are no issues or trouble codes I would just leave it alone.

My car may require a new steering column or rack due to noise when turning the wheel. If the rack is replaced, will the front end need to be aligned? Can the front wheels be aligned independent of the rear wheels?

Yes alignment will need to be done should have been figured into estimate. And a 4 wheel alignment is necessary.
