Power steering pump?

We replaced the rack and pump. Still no power assist. The new pump didn't seem to be pumping. No high pressure. Took pump off and manually turned it and it didn't seem to be pumping. Got another new pump and manually turned it by hand and it didn't seem to pump either, so before we put it on, we got a third pump and tested it by hand and it was the same, so we went ahead and put it on. And still so pumping. No fluid circulation in the reservoir.

Hi,

Did you bleed the system? If not, raise the front wheels off the ground. Turn the steering from lock to lock with the engine off several times. Start the engine and do the same thing again. This removed air from the system.

Also, did the new pump come with a pulley already installed or did you install the original one?

Let me know if that helps.

Take care,

Joe

It came with the pulley on it. We always turn the steering from lock to lock after installing a rack. My next move this morning is to inspect the reservoir by taking it out and dumping it to see if there is anything in the bottom. Thank you for your response.

Hi,

Thanks for the update. If possible, let me know what you find with the reservoir. Something could be plugging it. I'm interested in knowing.

Take care,

joe

Turned out to be the reservoir. There was a lot of sludge. Even after heavy washing. Fluid ran through it, but apparently the screen wouldn't allow sufficient flow. The takeaway here is. When bench testing a power steering pump, you must use a drill, hand turning it won't do.
