On Thursday I left work, and the car started making the undeniable power steering whine. I turned off the A/C and rolled the windows down and she was fine. After about a mile or maybe two the instrument panel and radio went dark. I mean gauges didn't work, no lights, no radio, nothing. But I could still accelerate the car. When I came to a light and slowed down, the car stalled and there was no power at all. I pushed it to safety and tried again. I had power but when I went to turn it over, I got the dead battery grind. What could be my issue? I should add, the belt seems a little loose as well.

Was the battery light on? This sounds like the alternator has failed but to be sure let's charge up the battery to get the engine started and use this guide to check the alternator output.

Here is how to change out the alternator in case you need it. Check out the images (below). Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem so we can see what's going on.

So, today I was replacing the belt and got it on and ready to go and the tensioner moved by hand. Wasn’t expecting that so once I replace that I’ll get a battery. I had it tested this morning and confirmed it was bad.

Okay, everything is back on but now the belt won't spin. What could be the problem? New install too tight? I should add this is for a 2005 Focus zx4. I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote the post.

It sounds like you have an accessory that is locked up. I would remove the belt and make sure everything spins freely.
