When I start my pickup I hear a loud squeaky noise like metal rubbing whether I am moving or parked. The truck drives just fine and the noise does not happen all the time but it is starting to happen more often now. It is coming from the engine transmission area. What is the best way to diagnose whether it is the flex plate or not? What is the best way to fix it if it is? Thanks.

Good afternoon.

Did you have the starter motor replaced? The reason I ask is there are shims that come with the starter and they need to be used to set the clearance between the flywheel and the starter gear.

Inspect all the teeth of the starter. Look for any missing worn half worn across teeth. That will make the noise.

Make sure the starter motor is tight as well. If it is not secured properly, It will make this noise.

No, I have not touched the starter. I have not had a reason to. I will check it out though. Thanks.

Well I am thinking the noise might have been the transmission. As I backed up into my driveway last night I heard a loud bang then I could not reverse anymore and when I tried going forward it went but made a noise. When I try an back it up you can hear something spinning but the truck does not move. I will assume transmission is shot? Or could that be something else? Thanks.

No, it sounds like the transmission has failed internally. It will have to be removed and inspected for the failure.

If you are considering replacing with a used one, I got mine from this site:

www. Car-part. Com

Good place.

Would a 4l60e transmission from a 1995 GMC Sierra work for a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado? The Chevrolet has a 4l60e also, but it is a 2002. The GMC is an old truck I have laying around but everything on it is still good.

What transmission do you have at this time? It has to be the same transmission.

The transmission I need to replace is a 4l60e which is in a 2002 Silverado. I was wondering if the 1995 4l60e I have in my GMC Sierra would work in my 2002 Silverado. Was not sure if the difference in years mattered.

Okay, that is good. The one thing you will need to verify is the connector at the transmission. Check both connectors, they must be the same.
