The engine quickly over heated, not gradually. Do you think I am dealing with a thermostat or a water pump?

Failing or weak water pumps normally create a very loud noise and also weep coolant from its weep holes. You will need to remove the thermostat and test it to see if its opening properly. Did you notice if cooling fan(s) come on?
