The dashboard/under dash heater blows cool air but the rear duct (to the second row of seats) blows hot air (as it is supposed to). I took the vehicle to a dealer and they said I needed a new heater core. Is this possible, since I am getting hot air out of the system -- at least partially anyway? I certainly do not want to spend several hundred dollars if this is an easy fix.

Before I went ahead and changed th heater core I would try to flush it first.
You can do this by first removing the front ( dogbone ) engine mounts and pulling the engine forward and secure it with a chain.
Remove the heater hoses from the core located on the firewall, connect a garden hose to one of the tubes and blast it out with water then connect the hose to the other tube and reverse flush it.
Reconnect the heater hoses and motor mounts.
Start the van and bleed any air from the system.
Hope this helps!
