Trac light off and tach at 0

I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix Gt and every once in a while the car will jerk while going down the highway and the Trac Off light comes on and the RPM gauge goes to 0. It will run fine but the RPM's will stay like that. The only way to fix it is to turn the car off and restart it. Can you tell me what might be causing this problem? Thanks.

I am having this exact same problem. My Car is a 1998, with a 3.8 engine and V6, and I just got my spark plugs and wires changed. I noticed the "trac off" light coming on, before the plug change, but did not notice the RPM at 0, but it may have been. Please help, I would like to get some feedback before I take it to a mechanic.
