Gas and oil

I have a 99 grand prix gt and it doe snot want to stay running, I discovered that when I took off my oil cap, I smelled gas, what could be the cause?

As you carnk the engine, and it dosen't start, the gas is still being injected into the cylinders. The gas washes the piston, ring, and wall of each one. The gas then passes by the washed rings and into the crankcase oil! BTW this further reduces the engines compression and ability to start! Change oil filter, and check plugs for gas fouling!
