Side Mirror Install?

I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix and need to install a new passenger side mirror. What should I expect to need to complete this project? What steps are involved in this project? Will I need to remove the door panel?

I think you might luck out. Book says remove door panel picture show only the small triangle shaped panel removed. A few pics to help, The one showing the glass removal, I try to push in on the bottom inner corner, this pops the top outer out enough to get your finger in there.

Dang! Well I didn't get as lucky as we first thought. That triangular piece is attached to the entire door panel. I did not remove the entire door panel but it would have been a whole lot eaisier if I would have. Just thought you might want to know. Thanks for the help the install was pretty easy besides a few scrapes from the door panel since I decided to just pull it back out of the way instead of removing it. Thanks again.

Hey I was wondering how the mirror is assembled. Does the actual mirror simply snap into the part behind it? In merlin's 3rd picture it appears to show a screwdriver behind the mirror to remove it.

My passenger side mirror broke, but the shell of the mirror is fine. It looks like I'm going to have to purchase the entire unit, but I don't want to have it painted so I want to be able to just use the guts of the part I buy.

I was just wondering if it is possible to remove the motor and mirror from a new shell and put it into the shell on my car without too many problems.

Yes the glass with the plastic base just snaps in! You can replace just the glass and leave motor shell and all alone. Most glass shops replace these mirrors for about 40.00.

Thanks merlin. What actually happened, I think, is that someone bumped into my mirror. When I got to my car, the plasic pieces that hold the mirror into the motor had been broken. The mirror isn't broken, just the parts that hold it into the motor.

I've talked to some body shops and it seems like parts and labor are going to cost me around $225. I think part of that is because they are going to order the entire unit and then have to paint it to match my car. If it does just snap in, then I should be able to fix it myself. I've checked around and it doesn't look like GM offers just the parts I need, so I'm still going to have to buy the entire unit (shell, motor, mirror), but I might be able to pick that up for around $60.

I need to know how to remove and replace the passenger side power mirror. The current mirror is broken and most of it is off, but parts are still there and dangling.

You have to remove the interior door panel to replace the outside mirror.

It is probably best to get a repair manual if you intend to do it yourself.

The replacement assy. Would have to be purchased from a dealer or junk yard.

The electronics in the driver's side mirror became faulty and they need to be replaced, but the only used part I could find does not match the color of my car, and I was wondering if it is possible to remove the electronics from the mirror that works and replace them in my old casing.

Yes, just tilt the mirror all the way in and pull the glass out of the shell, then you can remove the works.

If the glass is broken, just get some replacement glass at most auto parts stores.

If mirror assy. Is broken, then you will have to remove interior door panel to replace.

Use car repair manual link in this thread or get a Haynes manual. They will give detailed instructions, and after reading, you may deceide to have it done rather than doing it yourself.
