My transmission went out and my car was towed to the local dealer. I was informed that the transmission could not be rebuilt and to install a new one would cost 3100.00. How does the dealer know it can't be rebuilt by just plugging in a computer and receiving a code?

Dealers (generally) do not rebuild transmissions, they replace them.

They could send it to a rebuilder, but would not warrant their work.

Best thing to do is to get a good used trans. and put it in.
