Hi, my grand prix has the 3100 v6 and it has a constant knocking noise which sounds like a collapsed lifter to me. The last oil change I added some additive and it seemed to quite down some but did not take long to be real noisy again. Lately it is getting louder. There is no problem with performance, no check engine light, very little smoke when it is started. Is the collapsed lifter idea a good place to start or sound like something else? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is it a ticking or knocking sound?

Thanks for the response, it is a definite knocking sound, louder than the sound of the motor. I have'nt had time to do any diagnosing yet. I'm thinking either a collasped lifter or a connecting rod bearing going bad. Any ideas would be helpful, Thanks

If it is a knock, then it is most likely either a connecting rod or main bearing. Lifters will tick.

Rather than replacing the engine, see if you can have the crank cut and get oversized bearings. It would be cheaper.
