I have a 1998 pontiac grand prix gt 3800. When I start the car the check engine light is on and when I put the car into drive it will drive for a little while and then it will just rev up in all gears

Take car to some autoparts stores and get codes read for free.

Post codes and we will go from there, but if trans is slipping, check fluid level first, but you want to get it fixed ASAP as slipping will damage trans very quickly.
