1997 Pontiac Grand Prix shifter

My shifter gets stuck in park. My service engine has been on but one day I got in my car and it started fine, but wouldnt shift out of park. It shifts if I press that little button that said shift releast (on the right side by the shifter) Any ideas on why?

Could be the park/lock cable is out of adjustment, which prevents the shifter from working unless the brake pedal is depressed.
If you can find a garage that will look at it take it there, or take it to the dealer
