Welcome, the temp switch is a ground for the gage, the more continuity to ground, the higher the gage reading. The hotter the coolant the less resistance. Possibilities, the gage itself has a problem-- the wiring circuit has a fault-- or the switch has a problem. On the 3.1 and 3.4 the switch is located on backside of engine, driver side, one wire connector, dark green. Unplug it, see if gage acts any differently?
