1985 Pontiac Grand Prix Only Trans for Kids and I, NEED HEL

Car runs and idles fine. When I depress the brake it will allow me to select gears but trasmission fails to respond. Is this a blown torque converter or a more serious tranny issue? Fluids are clean, no smokey smell. This is my only means of transportation for me and my kids, Please Help!

It's either the tranny, or if the shifter feels different, or very easy to shift, a broken cable?
