When I am in reverse and I switch to drive really quickly my automatic transmission on my Grand AM seems to take a few seconds to engage and can either be right there or it seems like it takes a few feet for it to fully engage.

If I am at a dead stop (stoplight or stopsign)it doesn't seem to have a problem, or if I start the car and go forward it doesn't seem to have a problem only when I am going from reverse to forward quickly.

Have you checked the fluid level with the engine running and the trans in park? This senario usually happens because you are either low on fluid or the filter is plugged. When was the last time that the trans. Was serviced by changing the filter and fluid? It may be time to do it. Add a quart of TransX when changing the filter and fluid also.
