I have a 1995 Pontiac Grand AM with a 2.3L Quad engine and I was changing my oil after having the thermostat replaced and I got an emergency call and I had to leave without having the chance to fill the engine with oil. The next day I replaced the oil with 4 qts of oil and replaced the filter, now my car wont start! I believe and hope the oil pump has just lost its prime. I have been searching the net for ways how to prime the pump and I am a little confused. I thought it was a self-priming pump, but I turn the key to the on position for a few seconds and nothing happens and the gauge doesnt move. Some sites talk about spinning the distributor with a drill, but my engine doesnt have one (2.3L quad 4), removing the oil filter and pouring oil inside the the filter hole, packing the oil filter with vaseline, or removing the oil pan and packing the pump with vaseline; Which one of these ways will work or is the easiest to do. I live in the city and I have to do this on the street so I have to do it quickly while there is not alot going on while I am working on this.

Not sure about your problem, did you run the moter without oil, or just didnt finish the job. If you just didnt finish you will be able to just start the car after putting in the oil and changing filter, the oil pump works off of the cam so the moter needs to turn over to prime the pump. Just watch the gauge and within 10-20, sec. It should be good.

No I didnt try to run the engine. I just drained the oil and came back the next day to re-fill the oil and oil filter. I can hear the fuel pump and the starter and alternator seem to be working fine. The engine just doesnt start or turn over. I watched the gauge and it moves very slightly but its really not noticable.
