Brakes problem
2003 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I purchased my car a year ago, in 2007. When I first test drove the vehicle I noticed a crunching/grinding noise when I applied the brakes. I addressed this w/ the dealer they said they would check it out. Before I purchased it they informed me they were new brakes and everything was fine, just a little noise from not being driven and moister. Since then the noise continued but only if it had rained or was really hummid outside. Now the noise seems a little louder and I hear it ALL THE TIME when I apply the brakes. What is it? The brakes seem to work fine, I don't have to slam my foot on the floor for them to work.

I had a similar grinding noise on my 2004 Pontiac Grand Am while braking. The noise was caused by rusty rotors; the noise disappeared when I replaced the brake pads and rotors with high-quality pads and rotors. Bought the pads and rotors from Checker Auto Parts for $170 and installed them myself. Make sure you put in high-quality pads and rotors because cheap pads and rotors wear-out fast, make grinding noise and have long stopping distances. You spend more money initially, but save in the long run.
