My service eng light is on cuz the cat is punched out.
my mechanic tells me I need a factory cat, which is way more $$. Wouldnt a Midas cat workk?
he says it's different cuz it's a GT.
Is this true? If ya, why?

Some aftermarket CAT's (or universal) are good, some are not.

Most reputable shops will replace with factory parts, especially on emmission items.

I would replace with factory parts (although you can shop around for better pricing).
A poorly designed CAT can cause many drivability problems down the road and you car would spend more time in the shop.
If you have emmissions testing in your area, the universal CAT may not pass.
