Engine Mechanical problem
2000 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 200xxx miles

I popped head gasket or manifold gasket yesterday. I contacted my "friendly mechanic" & hes telling me "its going to cost $1,200 if it's obvious that the leak/blow-out is the manifold gasket". Which kinda shocked the hell out of me, thinking he was going to give me a good deal. Oh but here's when he says "If its not there & I've got to send the heads off to get magnafluxed". Saddly to say the head gasket is going to run me $1,600. Of course thats only "IF" the heads come back in good shape.

So i'm guessing my question is "Is that a good price? Or should I shop around a little more?

Have a compression test performed to rule out/in head gaskets.

If compression is good, have a cooling system pressure test to check the intake gasket.

GM had many problems with intake manifold gaskets, but the two tests above will tell you which one is the culprit.
