1999 Pontiac Grand Am motor knocks

1999 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

when you start the car the engine knocks. Wondering what the problem is. Really dont want to replace motor. The previous owners ran the car without oil in it.

It is either a rod or main bearing. It will get worse and eventually sieze.

Your only choice is to repair, replace. You could also get a used engine from a junkyard.

If knocking when you purchased it, why did you buy it?

Some people will fill crankcase with STP or Lucas to try and hide the knock, but is is only a band-aid.
