Engine Mechanical problem
1999 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cyl 173000 miles

6 months ago the car started sputtering around 50 mph and ran good after 55 mph. We learned to accelerate through this problem area. Now the car is stalling at stoplights and blows carbony smoke when reved up in park. When the car is started it seems to idile fine in park but when I put the gas pedel to the floor it only revs to 4000 rpm and sputters and bucks. When I take the car out of park at low idle and put it into gear it starts sputtering and shaking the whole car. Could this be the coil shorting out? Something is happening when the engine is under load. Thankyou

Which 4 cyl? Quad 4 motor?

The coil housings, coils and boots are a trouble area on those. You can probably get the whole assy cheap from a junk yard. Maybe stop down and see if they even let you try to pop one on to try it. If it works, get new boots.

Carbon is a sign of rich, so ignition problem sounds reasonable.
