Transmission problem
1997 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive 126.00 miles

For the 1997 Pontiac Grand AM 2.4 LT, are the shift solenoid (s) in the bottom of the transmission coverd by the pan or on the side of the trans. Itself and will I be able to get to it without droping the trans?

The shift solenoids are on the valve body of the transmission. The valve body is located under the metal cover on the side of the transmission. Removing the cover without pulling the transmission may prove to be difficult but can be done without pulling the whole tranny. Once the cover is off you should be able to see the shift solenoids. Hope this helps :)
