1997 Pontiac Grand Am battery charge light

I went out last week when the weather got really cold outside to start my car the battery light came on and idling strange I brought the car home let it sit in the sun the battery charge light went away drove the car for another week and then the light came on again is my alternator going out its been about 7 years ago when replaced I just put a brand new battery when the light went out I took it to my mechanic he tested the battery he stated everything is looking ok and charging ok so now the light is on again im just dumbfounded on this and scared to drive the vehicle it might stall me somewhere

The alternater may be going bad. Have seen some charge and then not charge. If you have a cold night coming up then, drop the car off the night before at the shop and ask him to check it first thing in the morning when the light is most likely to be on.
