1991 Pontiac Firebird 6 cyl Automatic 116000 miles

I was driving and my car began to lose power, it almost shut off but then it kept going. I drove a little further and my car died on me. I started it up again and drove a little further, and then it died again. This happened 4 or 5 more times until I made it to a gas station. I put in gas because I saw on the gas gauge that I was low, but after I put in gas my car wouldn't start, it just turns over. If I step on the gas peddle as soon as I turn the key my car revs up but it dies immediately. I listened for the gas pump and I can hear it whirring. Someone told me it was either the gas pump or that some kind of alarm had been triggered by the chip in my key.

Check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel pump-if okay -look for spark-disconnect a plug wire or 2 ground it to the engine and have helper crank engine over -do you have spark? Let me know

First thing that comes to mind is a plugged fuel filter. If you have checked or changed this, then you need to find out what you are missing and keeping the car from starting. Is it fuel pressure, spark, injector pulse, or all three. Instincts tell me it's a fuel problem. Please advise.

I was about to start doing what you guys suggested when I decided to try the car one more time just for the hell of it. The car started up, which surprised me because it wasn't starting yesterday. I drove the car around to see how it was doing. I can drive it around if I give it a little bit of gas, if I go over 20 miles an hour though it dies on me.

It still sounds like it's starving for fuel.
