Pontiac Grand Am overheats

I have a 2004 pontiac grand am about 103,000 miles on it and about 2 weeks ago the air conditioner went out in it and now i've noticed that the temperature guage goes up steadily whenever im stopped or idle I took it to the auto shop and they said it could be the compressor I honestly have no idea what it could be I have no clue about cars I would just like some honest advice

The compressor is the major component to the air conditioner and about the rising temperature gauge, I'm not sure about that being linked to the compressor. Have the air conditioner checked to see if their is enough Freon gas inside. Maybe your radiator coolant isn't good anymore and maybe thats why the temperature is rising. Having an air conditioner, your car needs a bigger radiator.
