Engine Performance problem
1990 Pontiac 6000 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have A 1990 Pontiac 6000 LE 4 cyl with unknown milage. The speedometer works sometimes and sometimes it wont. When it don't work, it looses power and get very poor gas milage. When the speedometer works, it runs smooth and gets good gas milage. It also leaves a black ring on the groung under the tail pipe when it sits idling or is first started for the day. Sometimes when you are driving, the speedometer with start to work and it feels as though the engine power has doubled and the car has plenty of power.

Can anyone please help? We can not aford to drive it at these gas prices. Thank you Rick and Karen

Did you folks ever get to the bottom of this problem? I have an '88 6000 that does the same thing. The Check engine light goes on, and the speedo stops working. The engine runs rough and has less power and it hogs gas. The for no reason it goes away and runs fine. The cooling fan also will go on when we first start the car which of course makes no sense. I replaced both engine temp sensors and it didn't help. Please tell me you got farther than I have!
