Hi, I had a used engine put in my truck listed above back in April. Right afterwards the check engine light came on, po2004 code. This truck has 2020 tags and I need it to pass smog so it can be tagged with current registration. I bought it for $7,000 in December and spent about $5,500 for the used engine along with insurance and timing guide and tensioner replacement. A different mechanic shop, a specialty transmission shop, has been trying to fix the check engine light for 2 weeks now. I replaced and flashed the computer, new imrc valve actuator, and the wiring was checked for continuity. I took the truck home last night and the Check Engine Light came on again, just not the additional po174 which was caused by the initial po2004 code when I first brought it in, so only 1 code instead of 2 if that helps. Please, please give me a list of possibilities that this could be so I can run it by them and hopefully be of assistance in troubleshooting this very tedious Check Engine Light code. Linkages, new harness, bushings, new intake, solenoid, lever arms, etc. Please list what should be replaced in order of importance and what is most likely wrong as it seems like this is going to be part swapping at this point, but I don't care, I desperately need it to pass smog. They fixed the Schraeder valves and refilled the Freon, so it blows cold AC and replaced the shifter cable so I'm sure they are a reputable shop, but this Check Engine Light isn't fun for either of us. Please, please help!

Hi,

The P2004 is indicating the intake runner control is stuck in the open position when it is commanded to close on bank 1. (See pic 1 below)

The tests related to the P2004 are listed starting with picture 2 below. Note that the tests are for multiple intake system concerns. You will notice that I jump several of the tests because they are not relevant.

The P0174 indicates a lean fuel mixture on one side of the engine (bank 2). I don't feel that would be caused by the runner. If the runner is causing a lean mixture, it would likely affect both banks. Plus, the runner is related to bank one and not bank 2.

By any chance is there an exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold or before the catalytic converter?

Also, take a look at the diagnostics I attached and let me know if you are comfortable performing them. Remember, chances are when you purchased the new/used engine, the intake and runner were on it. If they were used, there was likely a problem prior to you getting it.

Let me know.

Joe

I think I found out the problem. This wasn't something I wanted to tackle and I'm glad I didn't because I'm sure my shop was really frustrated. There was another f150 in their parking lot they were working on. He thought the IMRC valve was bad after replacing that, the PCM and checking the wiring and sure enough it was. It was an aftermarket one and I bought one from the dealership today 4x as expensive at four hundred dollars but that should do it. After looking at the runner valve on the other f150 that had a working IMRC valve, he noticed that that part shouldn't move manually with the lever arms and that the lever arms didn't go out far enough. I finally feel confident that this should be resolved after going down there and looking at it so it should be ready to pass smog tomorrow and get it tagged.
Thank you, I'm glad today was a ray of hope for my truck as I use it for my small businesses, detailing and some mobile mechanic work. I appreciate you guys and I'll respond tomorrow if it was a success.
