My engine makes rattling sounds when the accessory belt is on. When I take the accessory belt off, the sounds dissappears. I have replaced the accessory belt with a new one. I have been told by my local mechanic that the crankshaft needs new bearings. I don't know if he is telling the truth. Can you please help? Thanks.

Hi steve not sure if the crankshaft needs bearings if it did you would have low oil pressure and noisy eng belt on or not. But since you hear it only with the belt on then something that the belt runs is bad. Tensioner idler alternator water pump if external. Usually a idler or tensioner spin these items with belt off and see which one is noisy.
