Hi gramaniki. Welcome to the forum. Your shift indicator is on a spring-loaded slide. To adjust it, just pull the lever all the way down to "L". The pointer will get there first, hit the stop, and wait for the slide to catch up as you move the lever.
Newer models, starting in '92, have an adjusting screw under the steering column for the indicator.
You'll have to provide more information for the noise. It would take forever to describe all the possibilities and clues for locating them. You'd be better off having the steering and suspension systems inspected.
