car starts fine and idles good, put in gear give gas--no acceleration?

Specifics!

Do you mean the engine doesn't speed up at all? It speeds up but the car doesn't move? It moves but has low power?

Low power is often caused by a plugged catalytic converter. One clue is it will tend to idle unusually smoothly.
