1998 Plymouth Breeze won't shift

my car started to jump rpms and then it just wouldn't shift what could be the problem

When you say it started to jump, was the trans slipping? Also, has the check engine light come on? There is a trans module that controls it and if it is causing the problem, the light should be on.
