1989 Plymouth Acclaim Erratic shifting

Sometimes when I first start out, the transmission will shift to the first gear, and then strain before shifting to the next gear; I don't continue pressing the pedal, but pull over and stop, then I press the pedal again and the transmission shifts smoothly. The transmission shifts smoothly most times. What could be causing the straining in the transmission? Thanks.

Could be a sticky valve or a seal that is going away internally. Has the trans ever been serviced? If not that is always a good place to start when having trans issues. Clean fluid and filter can solve alot of problems
