Hi, I've included a picture. Can you tell me your professional opinion of what I'm viewing and probable causes? I had this vehicle 9 days off a used car lot. The 9th day loud humming noise while accelerating 0-50mph minor omits of gas smell.

If you have a warranty this would be covered under it. That is the rear differential, it is the primary item that moves the vehicle down the highway. With that damage and the likely internal damage, it will need to be replaced. Replacing it is a long job, first thing is you need to get the vehicle in the air for access. Then the exhaust system has to be removed. Next the drive shaft and both rear axles are removed. Then you unbolt the entire rear carrier as the 2nd and 3rd images show. Then you lower it enough to get to the electronics. Disconnect those and remove the unit. Reverse this process to put the replacement back in.
The last picture shows the complete unit you would need. I would say you need to talk to the dealer ASAP.
