Is my starter motor a permanent magnet starter motor with six electromagnetic poles around the armature and brushless around the commutator.

Hi, I have the vehicle listed above SV model, and I need to know about its starter motor, is my starter motor a permanent magnet starter motor with six electromagnetic poles around the armature and brushless around the commutator or is it an older starter motor with four electromagnetic poles and field windings around those four electromagnetic poles and two carbon brushes around the commutator which wear out very fast? And how long does the starter motor on the vehicle listed above SV model last if it is a permanent magnet starter motor? I know how long does the older starter motor with the carbon brushes and field windings last because a very long time ago in the 1990s I used to have a 1986 Mercury Lynx Wagon whose carburetor was stalling the engine and the Mercury Lynx starter motor only lasted 105,000 miles, in the late 1990s after the 1986 Mercury Lynx came the 1990 Ford Taurus which had non-sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection and wasn't stalling but its starter motor didn't last much longer than the starter motor of the 1986 Mercury Lynx the Ford Taurus starter motor lasted 130,000 miles, in the 2000s I had a 1995 Ford Aerostar minivan which had a permanent magnet starter motor but had a factory defect of the starter cable terminal corroding and so it didn't last long, I know that a permanent magnet starter motor looks smaller than the older type starter motor because the permanent magnet starter motor doesn't have all those bulky field windings, but in an Advance Auto Parts website photo the 2014 Nissan Versa SV starter motor looks bulky, if it is a permanent magnet starter motor then how long does it last and how much does it cost to replace in both parts and labor? Before the 2014 Nissan Versa SV we had a 2000 Kia Sephia which lasted 390,000 miles and it had a permanent magnet starter motor which I replaced as preventive maintenance at the Gainesville Pep Boys and the cost was $200 dollars, $100 dollars for the starter motor and $100 dollars for labor at Pep Boys, how much more expensive is the 2014 Nissan Versa SV starter motor to replace? I don't remember the Advance Auto Parts starter motor prices because they had so many different kinds of starter motors for a 2014 Nissan Versa SV and I got confused but how much do repair shops charge for labor and parts for a 2014 Nissan Versa SV starter motor and is the upper radiator hose impeding removal of the starter motor and does it need a coolant change to replace the starter motor? Thank you in advance for your helpful and valuable information on the 2014 Nissan Versa SV starter motor and like master technician Ken once requested this is a one subject question which concerns the 2014 Nissan Versa SV starter motor whether it's a permanent magnet starter motor or the older type of starter motor, thank you.

Hi,

As far as the starter motor is concerned, all I have is an exploded view of the component. Pic 1 is the exploded view of the starter motor and pic 2 is the legend of parts.

As far as draining the coolant, no that isn't necessary. You will, however, need to remove the oil filter and air inlet tube.

The last three pics are the directions for the removal and replacement of the starter motor specific to this vehicle.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Thank you technician Joe, from the diagram or schematic it looks like it's a permanent magnet starter motor because I don't see any field windings around the electromagnetic poles, it has carbon brushes but older type starter motors had only two carbon brushes on the commutator, this starter motor has multiple carbon brushes which are less likely to fail, now can I please switch to the alternator? Is it okay to ask about the alternator or do I need to initiate and verify a new question starting all over again? All right is the vehicle listed above SV mode current-producing device an alternating current alternator or a direct current generator? I am asking because I don't see an integral voltage regulator in the back of this thing, I just see two wires coming out of the back but no integral voltage regulator and also in the back of this device I don't see a cover that would hold the rectifier assembly's three positive and three negative diodes with the rectifier's diodes being the electrical components that switch alternating current to usable direct current or useable direct current to operate the electrical and electronic accessories, and how much does it cost to replace this alternator or generator device? I saw in the Advance Auto Parts website that an alternator or generator device for a 2014 Nissan Versa SV sells for well over $300 dollars and I don't know how many hours labor does it take to replace it, in my original post above I mentioned that before the vehicle listed above SV mode I had a 2000 Kia Sephia and that Kia Sephia took $300 dollars to replace its generator in both parts and labor but the vehicle listed above SV mode's generator or alternator sells for over $300 dollars for the part alone at the Advance Auto Parts store and a repair shop would have to mark it up to make a profit on it so is $600 dollars enough for parts and labor as I see that access to the generator or alternator is relatively easy, you just remove the serpentine belt to access it, and finally I forgot to ask how long does this alternator or generator last? It now has 85,000 miles on it but the 1990 Ford Taurus we once had, its alternator lasted less than 50,000 miles, thank you in advance for your helpful and valuable information technician Joe.

Hi,

The regulator is internal with the alternator. If you look below, I attached the wiring schematic that you may find helpful. Also, as far as the life expectancy of an alternator varies. My wife's Durango now has 125K on it with no power issues. Actually, the original battery from 2013 is still in the vehicle and has made it most recently through below 0 temperatures.

Although the life is variable, I would expect one to last at least 100,000 miles.

Let me know if this helps.

Joe

See pic below. Note: Pics 1 and 2 are from the same page. I cut them in half to make them readable. Pic is the manufacturer's schematic. Pics 4 and 5 are from Rockauto. Com with prices for alternators. You may want to check them out. If you decide to get one, let me know and I'll get you a discount code for an additional 5% off.

Wow, Rockauto. Com alternators are much cheaper than Advance Auto Parts and the Rockauto. Com website has a variety of so many different alternators all of them miraculously cheaper than $300 dollars while all those alternators that Advance Auto Parts supplies are way above $300 dollars and Advance Auto Parts slams you with a core charge, the electrical schematic calls the charging device a generator instead of an alternator and I don't see diodes or a rectifier assembly in the electrical schematic, Wow, the 2013 Dodge Durango is very dependable because in the 1990 Ford Taurus we once had a long time ago the alternator and battery kept going out once every single year, and its original alternator only lasted less than 50,000 miles before it discharged the battery. Thank you very much technician Joe for sharing all that information with me. Written by Alex Stathas

Alex,

You are very welcome. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. If you decide to get one from rockauto, let me know. I have discount codes I get because I get a lot from them. It's only 5%, but it adds up.

Take care of yourself,

Joe

Note: Please understand, we are not affiliated with rockauto in any way. I don't want you to think we get a kickback from them. LOL
