I have a 96 Saturn SL2 and its starting to misfire (sometimes) and its starting to smoke and has recently having high idle and I dont want to waste money on guessing the problems any clues would greatly br appreciated

I have put in a new fuel filter but it actually is starting to sputter all the time now

I would start by looking at the plugs and wires and inspect the coil towers for corrosion. Also you could have a vacuum leak causing the high idle or a egr valve that's sticking causing the high idle and rough running. Have you checked for codes in the computer yet?
