1999 Peugeot 206 Automatic

I hardly every use my peugeot 206 and one of the weekend's I used it, it over heated while caughtup in traffic. The following weekend it work fine for the saturday morning but wouldnt start to take out in the evening. RAC says it was probably the CAM belt, but funny on sunday, it started and sounded fine.
I took it to the garage for a full service check and I was told it was the head gasket.

My question is, I am being charge a £700 to repair the crack ( I was told by my mechanic that it cost alot to take the engine off and get it pressure tested). Is that the normal price range to get it fix?

I would expect this repair to be in the region of 400 unless the head needs replacing !
