I changed the plugs, they were carbonized, cleaned air inlet, throttle position sensor and the other thing.
Engine idles rough, wont rev up, but when I put it in drive idle improves and while holding brakes down will easily accelerate.
When I put it in reverse, it stalls.
Any idea as to what might be wrong?
I have put in 5 gallons of gas with treatment and octane booster also.
Help!

Hi,

Wow, that's a tough one. It could be related to the transmission/torque converter not releasing or disengaging the engine.

Let's start by seeing if there are diagnostic trouble codes. This vehicle has an OBD1 system, so you don't need a scanner to check codes.

Follow this link and let me know the results.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

The only code is 55.
Is there a connection between the transmission and ECM?

Hi,

As far as the transmission, in 1992, they didn't. Do me a favor. Take a look at the pic below and let me know what you feel best describes what you experience. Then, I'll take a look into the specifics.

Also, when in drive, does it ever stall, or is it only reverse? I remember an issue where the transmission cooler lines were partially plugged and causing a stall or issues with reverse. It's a thought at this time. Is the transmission fluid clean and full?

Let me know.

Joe

Stalls and sluggish in reverse, is the one I would pick.

Hi,

Okay, the easiest place to start is the transmission fluid condition. A plugged cooler can cause this. Is the transmission fluid clean and full? Here is a link you may find helpful. Also, if I recall, this one is checked in neutral and not park. It will be indicated on the dipstick.

Let me know.
