P3442 & P0306 codes?

This is on a 2012 5.7 hemi
Reman engine about 12k miles. Replaced the #6 injector. Have replaced coils, spark plugs, MDS solenoids & jumper wire. Replaced VVT solenoid. Cam & crank sensors. Has a rebuilt PCM put in in August 2025. Ran great up until a cold spell we had in Indiana before Xmas. Then lights came on. Sometimes I can clear codes but still runs rough code returns at various times.

Hello,

The first thing I would do is a compression test on #6, this video will show you how, you can rent a gauge set form the auto parts store for free to help with the test.

Okay, then the cylinder deactivation control solenoid has gone out. You will need to remove the intake manifold here is how to do the job which you will need a special tool for.

Install the Remover, MDS Solenoid 2028200090 (1) and securely tighten the retaining screw (2). Lightly tap on the top of the MDS solenoid removal tool with a rubber mallet or equivalent to break the seal. Pull vertically and remove the MDS solenoid(s). Clear the codes once completed. Check out the images (below). Let us know how it goes

The first thing I did was replace all the solenoids & jumper/harness. I've replaced the VVT solenoid as well.

Sorry for late response, just worked on it over the weekend. I have checked all grounds & connections, they checked out good. Replaced #6 MDS s solenoid again just to be sure I didn't have a faulty one. Still have same issues.
I removed valve cover and replaced coils to run engine for a short period to watch rocker arms. The #6 intake isnt moving. So my question is now is it a collapsed lifter or
(signal/no signal)from PCM not activating #6 solenoid? There is times I've reset the codes and truck will idle & run good for a short period then the code will reappear and start running rough again. The video shows a short clip of the startup the top valve is #6 intake.

Nice work, you have found the problem for sure. This can be one of two things either the lifter has gone bad and does not hold oil pressure or the camshaft has gone flat on the one lobe. You will need to remove the lifters but first the cylinder head will need to come off. Here is what the manual says about the problem.

NOTE: If excessive camshaft lobe wear/lifter wear (roller failure) has been identified, further inspection should be performed before attempting repair. Remove the Variable Valve Timing Solenoid (VVTS) and inspect the screens for metal debris. If no debris is found continue with camshaft and lifter replacement. If debris is found engine replacement is required.
