I have had this code twice and I did take out the fuel senders to clean. But did not happen until I drove it on interstate and I did hit something on road that went by dear passenger rear tire and code appeared immediately. Stopped to access damage and was nothing and cleared code and drove another 30 miles and shut car off twice in times before it did it again. Can the sender seals be cause or cap less full?

P0442 indicates a small evap leak that can be pretty hard to diagnose at times. When you removed the fuel senders did you replace the seals or reuse the same one? If you refused the same ones I would recommend you replace the seal if you never had this code until after you did the repair.

If you had this code prior to the repair then you would need an evap smoke machine to smoke the entire evap system to trace where the leak is coming from. Also inspect the fuel cap seal for any cracks or tears. If you see the seal damage replace the cap. Here is a link that should help you get a better understanding on evap leaks and repair:

If you have any other questions related to the evap system do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you, I did use same seals, and was second time using them, prior to this code. I was just concerned it was bottom damage but none was visible as it was a plastic cover I ran over. The only thing I did prior to this was the sender maintenance and even on a 700 mile trip I had no codes, and I don’t have a gas cap as it is the cap less full and I need to check that as well. But my gas gauge hasn’t gone to full over the course of 4 fill ups and trying to run that down as well while this code came up. I took senders out, passenger side empty, driver side was full, but still after this no gauge changes or no other codes but the P0442. I did the engineer gauge test and fuel gauge sweeps full to empty very well. So I’m lost.

Then I recommend you replace the seals first and reset the codes. Drive the vehicle and let us know if any other codes post. As for the level not reading properly, once the fuel level is low, remove both senders and with key on engine off lift each sender to see if there is a change in the gauge. If no change in them then that sender is most likely faulty.

I would look closely at the evap canister under the rear of the car under the trunk area. I've replaced tons of these after people hit debris on highway or go over curbs etc. A damaged canister can also cause the fuel filler nozzle to click before the vehicle is actually full. I included a blow up of the evap canister and lines, inspect the lines at the left rear wheel well areas as well.
