I have a Corsa c 1.0 petrol. I keep getting error P0170 fuel bank 1 error. I can't figure out what the problem is. Now when the engine light comes on car seems to run fine, now when I turn the check engine light off and clear all codes the car seems to stubble and the revs seem unsteady and acceleration becomes hesitant. Now I am wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to what this could be and what I could possibly check?

Hi:

First, this vehicle isn't offered in the US, but I will try to help. Please keep in mind I have little to no technical information specific to this vehicle, so I am going to try to figure things out without that info.

I looked at the code and found it is related to a fuel trim issue. The term "Fuel Trim" refers to how long the computer allows the injectors to stay open. By having control, the computer can adjust how rich or lean the fuel mixture should be.

On most vehicles, this type of an issue will cause the vehicle to run in what is called a closed loop. That means nothing more than the system is being controlled by predetermined settings from the manufacturer. Hence, it runs good when the light is on. When the light is off, it has to run its self test again causing it to run poorly based on the problem. Once it recognizes a problem exists, the light comes on, it goes into a closed loop operation, and it runs good again.

So, there are a few things that control fuel trims. Fuel pressure and oxygen sensors are where the problems usually stem from. Confirm pressure is good (not too high) and check the oxygen sensors for damage, disconnected or damaged wiring, or anything you see that could be a problem.

Next, if it is possible for you to get your hands on a live data scanner, I need to know what the fuel trims are. There are both short term and long term trims. The short term ones I am most interested in knowing. It should be identified as STFT on the scanner.

Do these things and let me know what you find.

Take care,
Joe
