Power steering warning light showing on dash and steering is hard

I have a 2001 Toyota Alex, and the power steering warning light is showing on the dash. The steering is also hard. Can you kindly give suggestions om how to fix this problem?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

I first need to confirm a few things. You indicate the EPS light is on. The problem I am having is that EPS was not offered in 2001. The power steering unit on an 2001 is hydraulic.

Can you please let me know for sure if you have electric power steering or is the year or model listed incorrect?

Hi and welcome back. I think I realize why I am confused. I looked up the Corolla. The Alex is not offered in the US, so my manuals have no specific information related to them.

What I suggest is that you have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. EPS operates via an electric motor. There should be a trouble code indicating which component has failed. One other thing, check to make sure there isn't a blown fuse.
