My car shifts into overdrive and then immediately kicks back down into third when I try to apply the throttle. As long as I am trying to accelerate, slowly, it will kick in and out of overdrive, but If I ease off the throttle and maintain a steady speed it will stay in third and I can drive without problems. I have taken it on the freeway at seventy mph in third with no problems. I have replaced the shift solenoids and the speed sensors. Before I replaced those items the transmission would continually kick in and out of overdrive no matter what I did with the throttle so it fixed part of the problem. Can I replace only the overdrive components to repair this transmission? If so, where can I purchase them? I have successfully rebuilt a dodge transmission in my 1990 Dakota (V6, RWD) and am not afraid to tackle this one.

Nice, have you run the codes to see what comes up? Here is a guide:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/retrieve-trouble-codes-for-chrysler-dodge-plymouth-odb1-1995-and-earlier-car-mini-van-and-light-trucks

Also, if the catalytic converter is starting to clog up it will lower the vacuum the engine producing changing the shift points.

Here is a guide to help confirm:

Please run this test and get back to us so we can keep helping you.

Cheers, Ken
