While in park my engine would accelerate on its own, when put into drive it would slam into gear and begin to accelerate on its own. I unpluged the accelerator sensor and it stopped accelerating on its own and when shifted into gear it is smooth once again. Now the service engine light is on. How important is the accelerator sensor? Is it possibly just the accelerator sensor cord? How much should I expect to pay to have it fixed?

It could be the wiring. But it is important to have that sensor otherwise the computer does not know where your foot is on the accelarator. Thus causing you to possibly burn a lot of gas. It should be fairly inexpensive for that part. Very important. Its called the (TPS)throttle position sensor.
